You can get 2 months of Skillshare Premium for FREE when you sign up to my class right HERE

I decided to come up with my Skillshare classes after opening my stationery business (Paige & Willow) because I got a lot of great responses regarding my illustrations. A lot of people didn’t realize that my illustrations were hand-painted and they showed a lot of interest on knowing about my process. That gave me the idea of sharing my knowledge by crafting these classes to anyone that is interested on expanding their creativity and learning new skills. I’m a huge believer that we can enhance our creative minds by helping one another and by sharing our own experiences with each other.

Knowing since a very early age that I wanted to do something in the creative field was always a given to me but sharing this experience with other people is something completely new. Drawing and painting is what drives me in life and it is both my work and my pastime so I decided to share all of that with you.

And the colour of the year is...!

Paige Willow

Every year, the creative people at Pantone gets to elect the colour that they think will reflect the year to come and this year’s chosen colour is PANTONE 18-3838 aka Ultra Violet. According to Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”

As designers and creative people we want to create beautiful designs but also reflect and deliver a message to empower and inspire people. One factor that determines the mood and the direction of a design is COLOUR. No matter how simple or complex a design or illustration can be, a lot of thought goes behind it to deliver a specific message. Through colours we can evoke feelings of happiness, love, joy and so much more. The combination of imagery and colours help us shape our message and give meaning to our creative minds. That’s why Pantone chooses a colour every year that will reflect and hopefully inspire people all over the world. According to Pantone Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

So this year you might see a lot of violet inspired designs out there and now you know why. What do you think about this year’s choice? What’s your favourite colour and do they mean something to you?

I've been battling in my mind what kind of things I should write on my first post and I was overthinking it too much (yes, I overthink things a lot, but who doesn't, right?!). So I decided to just introduce a bit about myself so you can get to know me a little better.

First things first, Hello! It's really nice to meet you. And thanks for stopping by. My name is Ketlin Martins and I'm a graphic designer who was born in Brazil but moved to Canada 10 years ago in pursuit of the dream to live abroad and make it on my own. I always loved to draw so I thought that architecture would be something that would push me and my creativity to do incredible things. Well, I was wrong (shhh.. let's just keep that between us). After a year and a half into my architecture's degree I realized that it was not for me so I decided to change major's and change countries, cuz why not?!. I moved to Canada and here I found a new passion: graphic design. So, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and I worked as a freelancer (for quite some time) and for a communication's agency for the last 2 years. One thing about graphic design is that I needed to follow what my clients wanted (cuz at the end of the day we need to make them happy) and not what I thought it was good. I started to struggle a bit about that because I felt that I was losing my voice and I needed to get that back. I always loved creating illustrations but I never really had the time to focus on that working full-time. At some point I had the idea of starting a stationery business but I didn't have the time and I let the fear of running my own business with no business background take over. But that soon changed...

One day, I came into the office to find out it was my last day (dun dun duuuun). It was time for me to leave and I saw that as an opportunity to dip my toes into my crazy idea of opening my own stationery business. So, here I am! Even though it was scary at first (and it still is, believe me) I asked myself the same question I asked when I decided to move to Canada without any family and friends; I asked myself "why not?!".

Moving to a different country without knowing much about it was scary but I knew if I didn't try I would regret it for the rest of my life. That same thought occurred to me when I thought about opening my own business. If I don't give this a try I will always wonder "what if".. I'm a huge believer that you should at least try something before saying "I can't do it" (except for jumping from planes and buildings, sorry, not my thing). What if you CAN actually do it? What if you can make it on your own and make your dreams come true? With that in mind I created Paige & Willow. A stationery brand that carries greeting cards and art prints all designed and produced by me.

I know I still have a long way to go and lots to learn but hey, I'm trying and so far it's been fun. Do you have any dreams or wishes that you would like to pursue but you don't know how? Or are you too scared to try it? Believe me, you are not alone on this. Most of us feel that way but just consider asking yourself, "why not"?. We can learn a lot about ourselves when we get out of our comfort zone and try something different. That helps us see our potential and grow as people. I hope you find my story inspirational and that you can go after your dreams. Come back soon! :)
